"Variations on a Midwestern Folk Song” is based on the tune “The Missouri Waltz” originally by Lee Edgar “Jelly” Settle and is most popularized by being the state song of Missouri. Rather than a set of variations where each one becomes increasingly complex or develops a particular idea presented in the previous one, these variations explore the idea of the folk song being used in different scenarios of Midwestern life. Each of the variations strives to showcase the wind ensemble as a dynamic and virtuosic ensemble, capable of blending many styles and genres.
