Forevermore March was written for the retirement of the composer's high school band director- Mr. Masemann. An expert in the American march tradition, it was only fitting to write a march for him that built upon those ideals. Most of the piece is original and hints at various marches from the canon, except for the the theme at the Trio. It is a favorite hymn of Mr. Masemann’s, “Beautiful Savior,” and works perfectly in that position. The first time we hear the hymn, it is played by a solo trumpet, Mr. Masemann’s instrument.

"Of Petals and Plains” combines two different folk tunes in a light-hearted setting. The first of these originates all the way back in England and was popular on both sides of the Revolutionary War; being entitled “The Girl I Left Behind.” The second comes from the Midwest and is entitled “Broken Ring”. These songs speak of a deep love, not just romantically but also for the joy of life and fellowship. The Arlington Flute Ensemble is based right near Washington DC and holds strong ties to the military ensembles there as well as many connections to the Midwest which makes this pairing very harmonious.

The first movement is inspired by the music of Sofia Gubaidulina, and her use of ratios in her music. This movement is structured around the golden mean and is split as whole by that ratio. The front section of the movement (the largest division of the mean) is further split by smaller golden ratios five times to allow this movement to develop as a Fibonacci sequence. It is further structured as a mix between a fugue and a fantasia, having a fugue theme that is interrupted by different impromptu section and many style variations. The second movement is a more traditional romantic style with a lot of freedom allowed from the performer. It is inspired by the beautiful colors that the flugelhorn can produce. It is in a traditional ABA form with a small cadenza-esque section in the middle. The third movement is in a traditional rondo format and is inspired by the music of Hindemith with fast moving themes, fast changes in the colors, and tonality. The differing sharp points and lyrical themes of this movement help to contrast the first two movements of the sonata. This movement allows for a fast and exciting ending to the whole sonata.

Modern technology has brought us closer together than ever before in human history, but that same technology can also be a cause of great distraction in our lives. When all our technology is vying for our attention the most valuable thing that we own is where we focus that attention. Focus your attention on what is important to you, focus on what you cherish, focus on what you love, focus on what you want to change. When you get distracted, because we all will, remember to come back and to be kind to yourself, kind to those around you, and to refocus and start again.

The second edition of Fog has stayed mostly similar to the original version, with standardized orchestration, and some changes in voicings to better fit the instruments. The piece consists of two main sections. The first section from the beginning to m. 80 in g minor, the second from m. 81 to the end in F Major. The whole piece is built entirely off the melody introduced in the first 8 bars. This chorale-like statement is played under everything from the beginning to measure 73. All other melodies and harmonies intertwine with this chorale and build off one another. This represents a fog bank slowly rolling in as the texture keeps getting thicker and thicker. While Fog can represent the literal weather event it is also meant to represent the struggles that we go through daily. The struggle to overcome challenges or as in the case of Fog the struggle to keep going when you feel lost. As this piece builds and builds you feel more lost, you get more stressed and anxious as you have no idea where you are or what is going on. The music, however, keeps moving forward. As it keeps moving forward you realize that this is the secret to getting out of the fog. If you keep moving forward with consistency, confidence, and determination, the fog will eventually clear and better days will be ahead.

Originally written for a senior recital, “To Higher Peaks” strives to live up to the beauty of horn writing and lives as a testament to the best of what the horn has to offer. The composer was artistically inspired by the Rocky Mountains and the development matches the climb it takes to scale one. Written at a level for all skill sets and ages, “To Higher Peaks” hopes to push performers to their next level of playing and it is dedicated to a teacher who does just that.

"Variations on a Midwestern Folk Song” is based on the tune “The Missouri Waltz” originally by Lee Edgar “Jelly” Settle and is most popularized by being the state song of Missouri. Rather than a set of variations where each one becomes increasingly complex or develops a particular idea presented in the previous one, these variations explore the idea of the folk song being used in different scenarios of Midwestern life. Each of the variations strives to showcase the wind ensemble as a dynamic and virtuosic ensemble, capable of blending many styles and genres.
